Words in the news - auntynn - 远程英语空中学习

ACROSS the country, people are uniting to bring relief to victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

We are familiar with slogans like "众志成城", "万众一心" and "不抛弃,不放弃". Here, we look at media reports in order to learn how we can express these slogans in English.

众志成城

"The opening ceremony of yesterday's relay was low-key, with the poignant recitation of a poem written by the late Chairman Mao Zedong in Jinggangshan in 1928. In the poem, Chairman Mao calls on the revolutionary forces to "join together to make it happen". The poem was cited…as a call for public support and involvement in rescue efforts in the disaster-hit areas of Sichuan."

A variation of "join together to make it happen" is "together we make it happen".

万众一心

The 9/11 terrorist attacks brought Americans together. People were called on to "unite" in the war against terrorism. The following slogans were used during that critical period:

United we stand.

America united.

We're in this together.

行动起来

We usually say "take action" or "make your move" to urge people to get involved in something. But after 9/11, the expression "Let's roll!" became a popular slogan.

These words were reportedly spoken by an American who perished (去世) in the 9/11 plane that crashed in the US state of Pennsylvania. The other three planes had already struck their targets. A group of passengers who learned of the news mid-flight decided to prevent the terrorists in their plane from hitting the fourth target (now suspected to have been the White House). One spoke to his wife before attacking the terrorists. He reportedly said "Let's roll" before hanging up the phone.

不抛弃,不放弃

In English, we can say "never abandon, never give up". This line became popular among Chinese immediately after the TV drama Soldiers Sortie began airing. In responding to the killer earthquake in Sichuan Province, people are using this line to encourage each other, and to express their persistence.
